About Hayao Miyazaki

Hayao Miyazaki is a bit of an entrepreneur. He is a film director, an animator, an author, a manga artist, a screenwriter, and a producer. His skill has been commended by critics all over the world. His art and films fill people's hearts will emotion until they could burst. But, it wasn't always like that.
Miyazaki was born in Bunkyo, Tokyo, Japan in 1941. He started his first career in 1963 as an 'in-between artist', meaning he was an animator that did it all. He moved around to and from different companies , like A-Pro and Nippon Animation, for almost a decade while directing, animating, drawing manga and other things that would get his name out there. In 1979, Miyazaki directed his first feature film, "The Castle of Cagliostro". This lead to him being able to direct "Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind", an extremely popular movie that made over 1.48 billion yen at the box office in 1984. In 1985, Miyazaki and three other animators founded the animation company, Studio Ghibli. Studio Ghibli is one of the most popular animation companies in Japan and around the world. The company has released movies such as "My Neighbor Totoro", "Howl's Moving Castle", "Princess Mononoke", and so many more. From 1985 to 2013, Miyazaki animated, directed, produced, and screenwrited lots of movies with Studio Ghibli. He also continued to write manga and short stories. In 2013, Miyazaki announced his retirement though he continued to work on short films, storyboards, and other things. He is currently working on storyboards for an upcoming movie, "How Do You Live?" that he hopes will be finished by 2019. Though, it may not be released until 2020 or 2021. |

Miyazaki was given this award in 1979 for "The Castle of Cagliostro", in 1984 for "Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind", in 1986 for "Laputa: Castle in the Sky", and in 1988 for "My Neighbor Totoro". Mainichi Film Award for Best Animation Film
Miyazaki was given this award in 1989 for "Kiki's Delivery Service", in 1992 for "Porco Rosso", in 1997 for "Princess Mononoke", and in 2001 for both "Spirited Away" and "Whale Hunt". Academy Award for Best Animated Feature
Miyazaki was given this award in 2001 for "Spirited Away" and was also nominated for the award because of "Howl's Moving Castle" in 2004 and because of "The Wind Rises" in 2013. |
